The Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove

The ‘iron fist in a velvet glove’ is a common expression used to describe a strong and powerful force executed with gentleness and control.  In the context of Tai Chi, this concept embodies the harmonious integration of hard and soft - yin and yang - to achieve a balanced flow of intent and softness. The ‘iron fist’ represents power and strength behind our movements.  It is an internal power, generated from proper alignment of the body, coordinated movements and the integration of breath and intention. The ‘velvet glove’ symbolises the soft and gentle aspect of Tai Chi.  It is not reliant on muscle tension or force.  When the concepts of the Iron Fist and Velvet Glove are combined, the result is a combination of power and grace.  Understanding the relationship between soft and hard when practising Tai Chi allows us to demonstrate the depth and sophistication of the art.

This concept of hard and soft is not only relevant to Tai Chi practice, it also has relevance in our day to day living.  It gives us the opportunity to explore different ways to deal with various challenges in life - we can approach situations with strength and assertiveness while remaining composed and calm.   We learn to respond rather than react and we gradually develop the skills to remain in control and balanced, meeting day to day challenges with courage and confidence.
